Reading: Reading will be assigned via Moodle. All reading assignments, materials and
associate information will be contained on the class specific page. Students will be
generally asked to read and prepare approximately 2 or 3 cases, treatises, articles or other
materials each class to facilitate a conversation about the class topic and related sports
law topics.
Instructor: Professor Edward Donovan, email at edonovan@donovanattorneys.com
Prerequisites: This is an advanced LL.M. level course. Students who are not in the
LL.M. program are admitted only upon Pericles’ determination that the student’s English
level and knowledge of law are sufficient to complete the course work, and upon the
permission of the Professor.
Objectives of the Course: This course is designed to give the student or practicing
lawyer a basic understanding of Sports Law concepts and complimentary areas including
intellectual property and its use with sports figures; international sports law and tribunals;
antitrust, monopoly and unfair competition; related injury and personal rights tort law;
contracts & agents; and constitutional law applications, among other legal issues. We
will also examine various specific sports & leagues, among other topics, including the
Olympics, professional & amateur athletes, the World Cup, U.S. and international
leagues, auto racing, tennis and such other topics as student interest and time allows.
Evaluation: Students will receive a pass or fail largely passed upon attendance,
preparation for class and participation.
Class Format: To maximize class discussion and learning, students are expected to read assigned materials before class and to attend and participate in all classes. In class,
students will be expected to discuss the assigned readings and apply them to in class
hypothetical situations. We have a total of 4, three-hour classes, no exam, so it should be
a fun class.
